All Hat, No Cattle | Proud Boomer Wellness

Hello Reader,

I tried to film a clip for this newsletter. Wanted twenty seconds of a clean deadlift, decent lighting, the whole setup. Gus had other plans. He wandered into frame around rep four, sat down center stage, and stared at me through the rest of the set with a look that said Get off the floor and feed me. No hero shot. No perfect angle. Just a sweaty 62-year-old and a Bernedoodle who has never once cared about a ring light. I kept the footage anyway. It's more honest than most of what passes for fitness content these days.

Certifications are a floor, not a ceiling. I hold NASM credentials in wellness coaching and nutrition, and I still tell people not to stop there. A real certification means someone sat for an exam built by people who study this for a living, and it means that person can be checked. An account with a ring light, a following, and zero clients willing to go on record has nothing to check. Follow the incentive. A coach gets paid when clients get results. An influencer gets paid when a video gets watched, and outrage watches better than "lift heavy things and give it a year."

Watch what an account shows you over six months. Real coaching includes the boring middle, the weeks nothing changed and the client showed up anyway. Con artists show highlight reels, suspicious lighting, and a client list that rotates fast enough that nobody sticks around long enough to ask questions. My own log book looks the same way. Same three lifts, tracked for a year. The weight climbs slowly. The excuses drop off page by page. Consistency across months beats intensity across weeks, every time I've tested it on myself.

Ask what happens when a client gets hurt. A real trainer has had someone get injured and had to work through it, adjusting the program and keeping the person moving without making things worse. That's not a footnote; it's the job. Certifications from NSCA, ACSM, NASM, or ACE are a starting point, not proof by themselves. The stronger signal is a trainer who asks about your medications and your joint history instead of ignoring them, and who adjusts instead of getting irritated when you push back. That kind of relationship takes real time with real people. Nobody fakes two years of it with a launch page.

Name one fitness account you follow that has actually shown you a client fail, get hurt, or get frustrated and keep showing up anyway. If you can't name one, that's the obstacle. Go find an account that shows the failures, not just the highlight reel.

Proud Boomer Press Hello Reader, Gus is a fifty-five-pound Bernedoodle who has decided the far side of the yard is where he needs to be right now, and the leash is my problem, not his. I used to end that pull sitting on the ground. Now I plant my feet, brace, and walk him back to the porch like I meant to do that the whole time. I did not get faster. I got stronger. That's the whole story. For years I ate to hit a number on a scale or a size on a tag. Every diet in that cabinet I cleaned out...

Proud Boomer Press Hello Reader, Kim found me in the workshop last week rearranging boxes of my own book so the cover faced out, like I was staging a crime scene instead of a shelf. She didn't say anything. She just looked at me the way she looks at Gus when he brings her a dead lizard, proud of himself, no idea why she's not thrilled. I told her I was "optimizing visibility." She told me I was a 62-year-old man alphabetizing his own name. Both true. I wrote a book called Not Done Yet, and...

Proud Boomer Press Hello Reader, Kim asked me today why I was staring at my laptop, grinning like an idiot. I told her the group is finally live. She said, "The what now?" So, formal announcement.
