99 Cents, All Week | Proud Boomer Press

Hello Reader,

Kim asked me the other night what I wanted for my birthday. I told her I wanted people to stop finding out about sarcopenia the hard way, the way I did, in a doctor's office at 58, hearing the word "decline" like it was a diagnosis instead of a choice. She said that wasn't a gift, that was a mission statement. Fair. But it's also why every Kindle book I've written is 99 cents this week. No catch, no funnel, no upsell waiting on page two. Just the price dropped to almost nothing so the excuse of cost is gone.

Muscle loss is not your fate; it's your default setting, and defaults can be changed. Sarcopenia starts showing up in your thirties and picks up speed after 50, but the research is blunt about this: highly active older adults hold onto muscle at rates that make "inevitable decline" look more like a story we tell ourselves than a biological sentence. The window everyone assumes is closed is still open. It just requires you to walk through it instead of reading about it from the couch.

Your protein target has been wrong for years, and it's not your fault. The standard RDA was built for avoiding deficiency, not for building or keeping muscle after 50. Current research points to roughly double that number, spread across your meals instead of dumped into one sitting, because an older body responds to protein differently than a younger one does. Nobody handed you that memo. I'm handing it to you now, for less than a dollar.

Age has never been the ceiling people assume it is. Studies on resistance training keep finding meaningful strength and muscle gains in people in their seventies, eighties, even nineties, some of them previously sedentary. What changes with age is recovery time and how carefully you progress, not whether your body can still adapt. It can. Mine did, at 62, and I've got the deadlift numbers to prove it.

All of it- the muscle science, the protein math, the programming, the straight talk about what the fitness industry sells you that you don't need- is in the books. This week, it's 99 cents. Grab it here: https://www.amazon.com/stores/John-Harris/author/B0FHG9LK59

QUESTION: What's the one excuse that's kept you off the weight rack the longest- cost, time, or just not knowing where to start?

Proud Boomer Press Hello Reader, Gus is a fifty-five-pound Bernedoodle who has decided the far side of the yard is where he needs to be right now, and the leash is my problem, not his. I used to end that pull sitting on the ground. Now I plant my feet, brace, and walk him back to the porch like I meant to do that the whole time. I did not get faster. I got stronger. That's the whole story. For years I ate to hit a number on a scale or a size on a tag. Every diet in that cabinet I cleaned out...

Proud Boomer Press Hello Reader, Kim found me in the workshop last week rearranging boxes of my own book so the cover faced out, like I was staging a crime scene instead of a shelf. She didn't say anything. She just looked at me the way she looks at Gus when he brings her a dead lizard, proud of himself, no idea why she's not thrilled. I told her I was "optimizing visibility." She told me I was a 62-year-old man alphabetizing his own name. Both true. I wrote a book called Not Done Yet, and...
